Curaçao is a lovely, tropical island. The temperature is usually around 30 degrees. How do the Royal Netherlands Navy personnel stay cool?

  • Fresh Lem: they get extra servings of lemon-flavored lemonade, called ‘Lem’.
  • Clothing: At ceremonies, they do not wear blue, thick woolen uniforms but light white uniforms. And on a regular workday, you see everyone in blue T-shirts.

On Curaçao, the navy personnel don’t only work at Marine Base Parera, but also at the barracks of Suffisant. There is also a large training area on the island, Wacawa, where Dutch soldiers train. This way, they learn to do their job in warm and humid weather.

When navy personnel are not working, they enjoy the island. They walk through the colorful center of Willemstad and cross the Queen Emma Bridge. On the street, the locals speak Dutch and Papiamento. Navy personnel and the locals of Curaçao are often found along the coast, where they spot flamingos, sea turtles, and special birds. When they take a dip in the blue sea themselves, they see beautiful fish.
