Hotspot 2: Alarm, Person Overboard!
The Caribbean Coast Guard works together with the Royal Netherlands Navy to keep the water as safe as possible for everyone. They check if ships are polluting or overfishing the sea. This way, animals can live safely in the sea and people can swim happily. Coast guards also rescue people in danger. A missing surfer? A diver in trouble? A ship with engine failure? When an alarm comes in at the Coast Guard Center on Parera, a Search and Rescue (SAR) operation is quickly set up, using a plane, helicopter, or ship. In a SAR operation, the Dash 8 can be used. This aircraft can drop life rafts and buoys into the sea. It has a large searchlight and special radar equipment to search.
Want to see the Dash in action?
Did you know… the Dash has bulging windows? They are called Bubble Windows. During a rescue operation, the crew of the plane can search much better for people in the water through the Bubble Window.
You will find hotspot 3 on the way to our other building, the “Geschutsmakerij”.
